Our location in the Wisconsin northwoods helps keep Willow Creek
Press off the publishing world's radar. Around here, we're more
accustomed to landing walleyes and muskies than big books and authors
- events hardly worth of note in Publisher's Weekly. But,
a few years ago we did get noticed with the release of Just Labs,
a unique and colorful tribute to Labrador retrievers. The book quickly
became a bestseller (now with 250,000 copies in print) and frankly
startled us with its success.
We were not surprised for long, however, and now an entire line
of popular Willow Creek Press titles evokes the myriad joys of dog
and cat ownership. Today we are known for these high-quality, light-hearted
books and feature over 40 such titles in a continually-expanding
line. The missing piece: a selection of breed-specific pet owner
guides to complement our breezy gift books.
Willow Creek Press is a publisher of fine quality books and calendars
focusing on a variety of topics that relate to dogs and other pets,
North American nature and wildlife, gardening, outdoor sports, and
cooking, including books of interest to anglers and hunters. Many
of the books Willow Creek produces could be described as coffee-table
books, with large formats and generous use of color photographs.
We seek distinctive, well-composed, crisply-focused images, and
favor natural settings and candid activities rather than studio
shots.
Calls for submission are sent on an as-needed basis. Photographers
may be added to the call list by sending tear sheets, a list of
subject areas covered, and an up-to-date resume. Web sites, light
boxes, and CD will not be reviewed as an alternative to tear sheets.
Do not send original images without an invitation to do so. Willow
Creek Press will not be held responsible for the safe return of
unsolicited submissions of photographs. Calls for calendar photos
will be sent in March.
One-time use rights will be purchased at a set or negotiated fee.
Calls for submission will state the terms. Generally, the fee will
cover reprinting, additional editions, or reissues, North American
rights. The photographs may appear in promotional materials for
the specific project for which usage rights were obtained.
To request inclusion in our call list, send tear sheets, a list
of subject areas, and resume to:
ATTN: Art Director, Willow Creek Press, PO Box 147, Minocqua, WI
54548.
Willow Creek Press may occasionally publish single-photographer
of collaborative works on a flat fee or royalty basis. Send proposals
with return postage paid to ATTN: Publisher, at the address above.
Include a 1-page cover letter briefly describing the concept, market,
and your qualifications; an outline summary; a sample character;
and if available, samples of previously published work.
For publication, we use large and medium format transparencies,
35mm slides, and 70mm reproduction quality dupes. We prefer to receive
duplicate images, and require that all originals be labeled clearly
as such. We do not accept prints or negatives. When a photograph
includes people, a signed model release must be obtained by the
photographer, and so noted on the slide or transparency (M.R.).
We do not need a copy of the release, but please have it available
in your files. Any claim for damage to transparencies must be made
within 30 days or return photographs.
Willow Creek Press is a publisher whose primary commitment is to
publish books specializing in nature, outdoor and sporting topics,
gardening, wildlife and animal books, and cookbooks. We also publish
nature, wildlife, fishing, and sporting calendars.
Personal memoirs, children's books, and manuscripts dealing with
limited regional subject matter may be considered, but generally
stand little chance of acceptance.
Please include the following details when submitting book proposals:
- Brief synopsis of the book being proposed
- Detailed outline or table of contents
- One or two sample chapters if available
- Samples of art, photos, or transparencies intended for use in
the book ( no originals please)
- Author's background, credentials, other publications relevant
to the project
- Notation as to whether or not proposal is a simultaneous submission
- SASE with sufficient postage for response and/or return of proposal
materials
If the proposal is accepted, manuscripts should be submitted on
3 1/2" floppy disks formatted in a standard word processing
program (Macintosh preferred). A hard copy (double spaced) should
accompany the disk. Letter quality print is preferred, but easily
readable dot matrix print is acceptable.
Proposals submitted to Willow Creek Press are reviewed for style,
content, appropriateness, conceptual integrity, author expertise,
and marketability. Therefore, a rejection does not necessarily reflect
any judgment regarding the literacy merit of an author's work. Please
note that Willow Creek Press is not responsible for the loss or
damage of any materials submitted for consideration.
We use a standardized author contract, which may be modified upon
mutual agreement by the author and publisher. Advances against royalties
are negotiable, and royalties are paid semiannually.
Address all inquiries or proposals to:
